About this card

Gengar · Legendary Collection, what to know.

About the Gengar card

Numbered 11 of 110 in Legendary Collection, released in May 2002, Gengar is a Rare Holo, a Stage 2 Psychic-type carrying 80 HP.

It evolves from Haunter, so Gengar is a later-stage card that set-builders usually slot into a full evolution run rather than buy alone.

Illustrated by Keiji Kinebuchi. Kinebuchi contributed a smaller body of Wizards-era cards but is responsible for several memorable holos, with a warm, heavily textured style.

Printed on the card, the Gengar Pokédex entry reads: "Under a full moon, this Pokémon like to mimic the shadows of people and laugh at their fright."

About Gengar in the Pokémon world

The fully evolved Gastly line via trade. Wide-grinning Ghost-Poison silhouette. One of the most beloved Pokémon designs. Fossil holo Gengar is one of the most-collected Fossil holos. PSA 10 examples have appreciated dramatically over the last three years.

What is Gengar worth?

Gengar is a holo rare, one of the cards that holds Legendary Collection's value. The print variant decides most of it: a 1st Edition copy in high grade commands a large premium over a Shadowless or Unlimited one. In top-grade 1st Edition, Legendary Collection holos range from the mid hundreds for the lesser cards up to the set's marquee chase; raw and Unlimited copies trade for a fraction of that. The live market price above shows the current figure by grade.

Print variants and how to spot them

Confirm the print and finish on Gengar before pricing it, since variant and rarity set the market more than the card name alone.

Grading and condition

For graded buyers, the holo window on Gengar is where most points are won or lost. Surface scratches and foil misregistration are common on Wizards-era cards, and centering was inconsistent enough that clean PSA 10s stay scarce. Read the psychic foil at a 45-degree angle under strong light before committing.

If you are collecting Gengar

For Gengar, variant comes before condition. A 1st Edition and an Unlimited Gengar are different markets for the same art, so settle the print before you negotiate. Demand a clear photo of the Gengar holo for any raw purchase.
