About this card

Gastly · Fossil, what to know.

About the Gastly card

Numbered 33 of 62 in Fossil, released in October 1999, Gastly is an Uncommon, a Basic Psychic-type carrying 50 HP.

As a Basic Pokémon, Gastly needs no prior evolution to put into play, which made it a practical card in the era's decks.

Illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita. Arita painted the Base Set Charizard and much of the early holo run, and his work has a painterly weight that set the visual tone of the Wizards era.

Printed on the card, the Gastly Pokédex entry reads: "A mysterious Pokémon. Some say it is a lifeform from another dimension, while other believe it is formed from smog."

About Gastly in the Pokémon world

A Ghost-Poison Pokémon. Black gaseous form with eyes. Fossil Common. Cheap and sentimental.

What is Gastly worth?

Gastly is an Uncommon, so raw copies are inexpensive and easy to find. The value is in condition: a genuine PSA 10, especially 1st Edition, can still reach a surprising figure for an otherwise common card. The live price above breaks it down by grade.

Print variants and how to spot them

Fossil shipped in 1st Edition and Unlimited, with no Shadowless print. The Edition 1 stamp under the artwork separates the scarcer 1st Edition Gastly from the Unlimited copy.

Grading and condition

Gastly grades forgivingly, but the same centering and edge standards apply. Pack-fresh raw copies are easy to find, which makes a clean PSA 10 submission a low-cost way to learn how the cardstock behaves under grading.

If you are collecting Gastly

Raw copies of Gastly are inexpensive enough that grading rarely pays unless you have a clearly pack-fresh example. For set completion, a clean sleeved Gastly is the practical move.

Variants to know

Three prints, three markets.

1st Edition

Edition 1 stamp under the artwork. Trades above Unlimited in matching grade.

Unlimited

No stamp. The standard, more affordable print.
