Magby · Neo Genesis, what to know.
About the Magby card
Numbered 23 of 111 in Neo Genesis, released in December 2000, Magby is a Rare, a Basic Fire-type carrying 30 HP.
As a Basic Pokémon, Magby needs no prior evolution to put into play, which made it a practical card in the era's decks.
Illustrated by Ken Sugimori. Sugimori is the lead character designer of Pokémon itself, so his card art carries the tight, on-model look that defined how the creatures appear in the games.
Magby carries this Pokédex flavor text: "Each and every time it inhales and exhales, hot embers dribble out of its mouth and nostrils."
What is Magby worth?
Magby is a non-holo Rare. In Neo Genesis, value concentrates in the holo rares, so a Magby trades modestly, though a clean, well-centered 1st Edition copy in PSA 10 is scarcer than the print run suggests and carries a real premium. Check the live price above for the figure by grade.
Print variants and how to spot them
Neo Genesis produced 1st Edition, Unlimited prints. For Magby, the print variant can change the price several times over, so identify it before you buy.
Grading and condition
Non-holo Rares like Magby are easier on surface but no kinder on centering. Wizards-era cards were less protected than the holos, so high-grade Magby survivors can be scarcer than expected, with edge whitening the usual cap.
If you are collecting Magby
For Magby, check centering by eye, edge whitening on all four sides, and surface under angled light. Non-holo Rares from this era are cheap enough that a PSA 10 submission on a clean Magby can make sense.
