Muk

Muk is card 13 of 62 in Fossil, released in October 1999, a Rare Holo. It is a Stage 1 Grass-type with 70 HP.

As a Stage 1, it evolves from Grimer, which places Muk deeper in its line and means most collectors hold it alongside the cards it evolves from.

Illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita. Arita painted the Base Set Charizard and much of the early holo run, and his work has a painterly weight that set the visual tone of the Wizards era.

The card's flavor text gives Muk a line of lore: "Thickly covered with a filthy, vile sludge. It is so toxic, even its footprints contain poison."

The fully evolved Grimer. Larger sludge mound. Fossil holo Muk is a quietly underrated card. Its Pokémon Power 'Toxic Gas' was a tournament-defining mechanic in 1999, which means surviving high-grade copies are scarcer than the print run suggests.

Fossil shipped in 1st Edition and Unlimited, with no Shadowless print. The Edition 1 stamp under the artwork separates the scarcer 1st Edition Muk from the Unlimited copy.

Grading Muk comes down to the holo surface and the borders. The era's foil scratches easily, so even a pack-fresh Muk can drop from a 10 to a 9 on a single hairline. Inspect the window at an angle and the corners against the frame.

Buying Muk well means pricing the exact print and grade, not the card name. The 1st Edition Muk trades above the Unlimited copy, so confirm the stamp before you agree a number. Always see the holo surface in good light first.
