Aerodactyl

Aerodactyl is card 16 of 62 in Fossil, released in October 1999, a Rare. It is a Stage 1 Fighting-type with 60 HP.

As a Stage 1, it evolves from Mysterious Fossil, which places Aerodactyl deeper in its line and means most collectors hold it alongside the cards it evolves from.

Illustrated by Kagemaru Himeno. Himeno is one of the most-recognized vintage illustrators, with a softer, more textured style that shows up across the Jungle and Neo runs.

The Pokédex entry printed on Aerodactyl reads: "A ferocious prehistoric Pokémon that goes for the enemy's throat with its serrated saw-like fangs."

Based on recent eBay sales, raw copies trade from $7.13 to $15 depending on the print and a PSA 10 runs from $160 to $465. The 1st Edition print is the most valuable, with a PSA 10 near $465. The table on this page breaks the price down by print and grade, updated 2026-05-19.

Fossil shipped in 1st Edition and Unlimited, with no Shadowless print. The Edition 1 stamp under the artwork separates the scarcer 1st Edition Aerodactyl from the Unlimited copy.

On Aerodactyl, look at the corners and the framed border first. Non-holo Rares took more handling than the chase holos, so a sharp, centered copy of Aerodactyl in a true PSA 10 is harder to find than the print run suggests.

For Aerodactyl, check centering by eye, edge whitening on all four sides, and surface under angled light. Non-holo Rares from this era are cheap enough that a PSA 10 submission on a clean Aerodactyl can make sense.
